The Vetcare Centres started over 46 years ago with a simple belief: that veterinary care should be about relationships, not transactions. Guernsey is the perfect canvas. A small island where everyone knows everyone. Where clients don't just visit once - they come back, year after year, generation after generation. Their parents brought pets here. Now they bring their children's pets. That kind of trust isn't built overnight, and it's not something we take lightly.
We've grown to two sites and built a team that genuinely cares. However, we're at a crossroads. After a well-deserved retirement of the island’s mainstay vet, clinical leadership gaps started to appear and our systems need rebuilding. We're not looking for someone to maintain the status quo. We're looking for someone to help us become what we know we can be. An evolution of an already fantastic practice with brilliant clients.
This is a project. A meaningful one. And we need the right person to lead it clinically.
We're a full-service practice. We do everything from consultations, surgery, dentistry, imaging and in-patient care. The only things we refer out are advanced diagnostics like CT and MRI, and honestly, those cases are rare. We believe in doing things properly, in-house, with our own hands and our own team.
The Clinical Director role is 60-70% clinical, 30-40% leadership. You'll be in consults and theatre daily but you'll also be shaping protocols, mentoring vets who have clinical questions and concerns, and building the kind of clinical culture that makes people proud to work here.
On-call is shared fairly. Currently it's 1 in 4 days, with alternating weekends. Saturdays are our main weekend commitment; Sundays are reserved for emergencies only with just one hour of availability. As we grow the team, this improves further.
MRCVS with at least 8 years under your belt, confident in medicine and surgery, ideally with a certificate or two. But honestly? We're more interested in who you are than what's on your CV.
We need someone who can hold a difficult conversation kindly. Who notices when a colleague is struggling before they say anything. Who can admit when they don't know something and then go find out. Someone with patience, because rebuilding takes time. Someone with backbone, because sometimes the right thing isn't the easy thing.
If you're the kind of vet who gets frustrated by corporate tick-boxes and wants to actually build something, this might be your role. If you want a polished, finished product, it isn't.
Let's talk about money first, because it matters. Guernsey has a flat 20% income tax. No capital gains tax. No inheritance tax. No VAT. A £120,000 salary here gives you roughly £87,000 take-home* compared to about £49,000 from a £70,000 UK salary. The financial difference is genuinely life-changing.
But Guernsey isn't just about tax. It's a safe, beautiful island with a proper community. You can walk to the beach after work (weather permitting of course). Your kids can cycle to school. You'll never sit in traffic. London is 45 minutes by plane when you need it, but most of the time you won't need it.
The island keeps giving, and we want to be at the forefront of caring for it.
