We'll start by being honest. We're a practice in the middle of a rebuild. Not because we failed, but because we grew fast, got stretched, and some things slipped. Standards that used to be second nature. Systems that worked when we were smaller. We looked around one day and realised we'd lost something.
So we're fixing it. We're investing in refurbishment. We're bringing in people who want to build, not just coast. We're being ruthlessly honest about what needs to change. What hasn't changed is our community. Guernsey is small - 65,000 people, and everyone practically knows everyone. Our clients don't just bring their pets; they bring their neighbours' pets, their parents' pets and their stories. Some families have been coming to us for decades. That loyalty isn't something you earn easily, and it's not something we'll ever take for granted.
We're a full-service small animal practice across two sites. We do everything - consultations, routine and intermediate surgery, medical workups, dentistry, imaging. The only things we refer are advanced diagnostics like CT and MRI, and those are genuinely rare. We believe in doing things properly, in our own building, with our own team.
On-call is shared fairly: 1 in 4 days depending on vet numbers, with alternating weekends. Saturday is our main weekend commitment; Sundays are for true emergencies only - just one hour of availability. We're not a 24-hour hospital, and we don't pretend to be. Work-life balance isn't a buzzword here; it's the whole point of island life.
You'll have clinical autonomy to work up your cases, but you won't be alone. We've got experienced colleagues who actually answer their phones when you need a second opinion.
You've been qualified at least 2 years. You're confident in a consulting room and can handle routine surgery without someone looking over your shoulder. But here's what matters more:
You're patient. Rebuilding takes time, and there will be days when progress feels slow. You're kind - to clients, to colleagues, to yourself. You notice things: the nurse who's overwhelmed, the client who's holding back tears, the detail in a history that doesn't quite add up. You can have a difficult conversation without making it worse.
You don't need to have all the answers, but you need to be willing to find them. And you need to be able to admit when you don't know - that's how teams get better.
The money: flat 20% income tax, no capital gains, no inheritance tax. A £75,000 salary here nets you roughly £58,000 - versus £52,000 from the same salary in the UK. Over a career, that adds up to something significant.
